Autopia: An Interstate Highway Museum

The Interstate Highway Museum chronicles the past, present, and future of America's unprecedented infrastructure project. Situated adjacent to the Dallas freeway, the museum opens as a visionary diorama to vehicles overhead. Traffic-stalled commuters peer down into an optimistic yet unfulfilled prophecy. Inside, visitors inhabit the vignette to experience the promise of yesterday's tomorrow and face the physical realities of their brave new roads.

Out of the juxtaposition of two disparate images with their own separate meaning, a third new meaning arises. Here, the simultaneity of the romantic vignette encapsulating past yesterday's visions of tomorrow's car culture occurs alongside the noisy, traffic-congested reality of car-oriented city development. The result is an uncomfortable and ironic epiphany in the traffic-stalled drivers overhead.
